As far as I know, you can not boot the root file system from the sd
card with out using the sd driver from TS. I don't think that anyone
has ported the wrapper for the sd driver binary blob to a kernel
different from the TS kernels.
You have a few options: NFS root, root on usb drive or root on the
on-board flash. For each case, the kernel and initrd can be on the sd
card.
