Matt, you are probably correct. This might shed some light:

  http://www.zeitoun.net/articles/timezone-change-debian-lenny/start

On my Ubuntu jaunty system, I have this:

:/etc$ md5sum localtime /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific
685e6cae6f7d63e690bf35b955ff4afb localtime
685e6cae6f7d63e690bf35b955ff4afb /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific
:/etc$ cat /etc/timezone
America/Los_Angeles

I should update the tutorial to this for step 20:

"""
20. Set the timezone:

  echo "America/Los_Angeles" > ./etc/timezone
  cp ./usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific ./etc/localtime
"""
