So if there is a problem, it stops during boot, and these messages loop 
forever?  Any errors thrown in normal use, if it does boot normally?

Can you build & test a kernel with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG and/or 
CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG defined?

Hardware-wise, there's not much that can be deteriorating.  There's a USBDF01W5 
EMI filter / terminator, I have no idea if they can age.  If so, you might try 
the other port, since there is one filter for each port.  But I guess that 
would affect everything on the USB bus, not just at boot time.
