Hi Peter,

Thanks very much for your advice, I will take it onboard once I get things finished in a few months time (hopefully!)

Just comforting to know that further down the line I shoudn't have problems powering this up from the car as
it would have being a disaster if I couldn't!

Good thinking about the voltage spikes, never know what could go wrong in car electrics either that would cause a surge.

I am kind of keeping a blog of the project on http://automon.killarneyonline.eu/ if anyone wants to track progress. (Some things might seem stupid and obvious on it but I'm new to this embedded environment!
More than likely create a website for the project after and continue it after college.

Cheers.

Regards,
Donal

Hi Donal,

Interesting project, keep us informed as to your progress.

With regard to powering the TS-TPC-7390, the input voltage is stated
at 5VDC to 28VDC which allows the nominal 12V of the car battery to
power the system. I would however place an inline fuse, reverse
voltage diode and possibly some over voltage device inline with the
power to ensure that no high voltage spikes make their way to the unit
while the car is starting or at other times.

I would tend to be overcautious when connecting a $500 device to an
automotive power source.
