What do you mean by a 'very old userspace'? Is it the filesystem you are talking about? Yes, I looked into the kernel config and the BSD legacy ptys were not set.

If you are using a very old userspace, it may still be looking for
legacy BSD master & slave ptys, like /dev/ptyxx and /dev/ttyxx rather
than the Unix98 ptys. You need to enable CONFIG_LEGACY_ PTYS in the
kernel config if this is the case.
