* Check that you've disabled the (m)getty running on the port from
/etc/inittab, if you had it running.
* Remove jumper JP2, or else you will get console messages on your
serial line.  Or keep JP2 in place, and add a jumper at JP4; this will
send console messages to com2.

Possibly, yes.  Hyperterm is known to cause problems; search the
archive for replacement suggestions.  Sorry, I don't use windows much,
but minicom works well for me in linux.
