Sorry to chime in late here.
The best solution I've found for interfacing x-level DIO logic to
RS-232 is here:
http://www.botkin.org/dale/rs232_interface.htm
Two MOSFETs, two resistors. You can free-build it right on a DB-9
connector.
I've used it successfully both ways - on the host-side and on the
peripheral-side, though it appears that at least one side should
probably be a proper rs232.
