If Debian is anything like RedHat, then take a look at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0. It should have an entry saying BOOTPROTO=dhcp and then perhaps all will work. Especially given that DHCP works for you over ethernet. Indeed, you will probably find a similar entry in ifcfg-eth0. Yahoo!
