I sent a response from my home account, but it hasn't turned up yet, so:

Thank you for your concern. A little while ago I submitted a patch for
the Linux USB storage code to allow it to handle LUNs larger than
2TiB. While it was only one line of code and three comment lines, the
key thing is knowing enough to be able to construct a correct patch.
It turned up in 2.6.24.
I have zero experience with FPGAs, but there are lots of resources on
the web, and the material at www.fpga4fun.com contains some useful
stuff on FPGAs and has an example PCI interface which makes a great
deal of sense when read with the spec.

Indeed. Perhaps we can convince TS to come out with a model with a
Virtex-5 on it or one of the larger Lattice ECP2/M FPGAs.
My key concern is to be able to build some simple functionality in the
FPGA without bricking the unit, and TS' verbiage on their website
suggests that the devices are quite robust in that regard.

Well, yes, the CPU has some interesting resources on it as well, and
creating drivers to access the XOR channels would be an interesting
endeavor.
