No, there isn't any reason why they can't be a different size. But of
course they need to be large enough to hold the images you want to put on
them.
(Note: partition 1 on the 7800 is different from partition 1 on earlier
boards... it is a VFAT partition for ease of transfering files to/from
windows e.g. using eclipse. But on the 512MB SD cards this partition is
only 4MB; only the 2GB SD cards it is much larger, and contains
documentation and whatnot.

There is something about the way everything got set up that I think would
cause this to fail, but I don't remember off the top of my head what it
is. On older boards the bootrom would just look at partition types. But
for the 7800 you should have part1=don't care, part2=kernel (type 0xda),
part3=initrd (type 0xda), part4=rootfs.
