mess around at that level.
My initial idea is to just pipe /dev/mouse (or whatever Debs calls
it) somewhere and count the bytes over a fairly long integration
period.
I think it's fair to assume in the physical setup I have that all
"mouse" movement will be +ve.
I'm rather hoping this will work well enough for me to let the kernel
serial mouse module watch the port without me having to grub around
with microsofts misuse of RS232 ports.
Watching little toothed wheels spin round must be about the most
common PC task of the last quarter century. I really hope not to need
to respoke that particular wheel.
The fact that it's interupt driven and handled by the kernel will
hopefully avoid missing wheel events during periodic heavy loads in
userland.
Unless I'm missing something all I am doing is replacing the mouse
ball with a water meter, the rest of the hardware and software is
already there waiting to be used.
