Many apologies are in order

1) There's nothing like reading the manual.  The COM2 wierdness is explained 
there - the 
DCD behaviour seems to be the inactive RS485 lines.  I had forgotten about that.

2) Sorry about being lazy by replying instead of creating a new thread. I 
didn't anticipate 
that behaviour.
