For receive only from a GPS, I find an opto-isolator and a couple
resistors is even cheaper/easier than the max232. I used 4n35
because I had a few sitting around, and it worked fine at 4800 bps.

I've had good experience with expresspcb's miniboard service. You get
exactly 3 boards of 2.5 x 3.8 boards for $51 + shipping, no matter what
is on the board. IIRC, shipping was about $8, so about $60 per order
or about $20 per board.

Last time I used them, I packed eight circuits onto a single board,
and then cut them apart with a dremel tool. Either the max232 or the
opto-isolator circuit is small enough that this kind of thing would
be practical. The only drawback I found is dealing with the dust you
get from cutting the board.
