Is this error message complete? I don't think so.
As it's assembler error, are you sure you're using ARM assembler from
crosscompiler and not assembler for your host(x86)?

I would recommend you to use gcc 4.X at least.

Don't use that local.diff. It's just some Lennert's local modifications.
That's why it's named also. You can use[1] instead.
