Thanks for the reply. I believe I found another thing. Several applications in my system are trying to write log messages to a single text file on the SD Card, and are each using the O_APPEND option to the open() function to assure atomic writes to the end of the file. As in: int fd = open(filName, O_WRONLY | O_CREAT | O_APPEND, 0644); Never mind guaranteed atomic or non-atomic operation. The file doesn't even get created on the card if it's formatted with VFAT!
