One common problem people run into is they backup the original script as
ifcfg-eth0.bak then modify ifcfg-eth0. If you take a look at
/etc/init.d/network you will see all files that start with ifcfg will be
parsed. As a result the file ifcfg-eth0 is parsed, then ifcfg-eth0.bak
is parsed. If you back up your network scripts you'll want to prefix
them with a different name.
e.g.
bak.ifcfg-eth0
Not sure if this your problem, but if not it may help someone else...
