I ran into this very same problem. The fix for me was to start over and unpack the Cygwin binaries' tar files using Cygwin's tar. Previously I had used WinZip, and it seemed to unpack everything OK (no error messages) but some files needed by the linker were missing. Thanks go to Eddie. Hope this helps someone. Yahoo!
