That might work if you are getting a low rate of pulses per second (ie. less 
than 256 or so) and have an 8-bit port to read the device. I need to handle 
pulses at up to 2kHz and don't have a spare input port. mfmikula mentioned 
needing to handle input pulses at 20kHz.
