I had the same problems with most of my laptops a month ago. It appeared
to be a buggy dhcp package.
I could reach sites by number, but resolving was broken. I had named
(bind) installed, so I ran the nameserver daemon with 127.0.0.1 in
resolv.conf. Still broken!
I ended up fixing this, by nslookup hosts in the /etc/apt/sources.list
from another computer that worked and replacing them by number in the
broken machine. This let me do apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. It all
started working after that. I'm still not sure how dhcp could have broken
the name lookups.
I hope that fixes your problem!
