We still support hardware that the manufacturers themselves stopped
supporting many years ago!
What do you mean by "more respect for legacy"?
If you mean that the kernel should keep endless layers of crap to give
the drivers a completely outdated interface that doesn't provide all the
niceties that users expect nowadays (advanced power management, native
64 bits, etc.) then I'm glad the kernel has no "respect for legacy"...
