It may not have loaded scsi_mod for you, try adding it as well with "modprobe scsi_mod" also paste the output from lsmod

Odds are you need the usb-storage module loaded, along with possibly others. Try "modprobe usb-storage" and see if you get /dev/scsi/ appearing. The output from dmesg would be helpfull

Quite often you can't telnet or ftp with a blank password and also common you can't telnet or ftp as root, so try setting a password first, failing that I think the file is /etc/securetty that sets up what users can login from where.
