Far more importantly, one has to ask how are the rs232 parameters
being setup for the port? What baud rate etc.?
You might need to use stty to set the port details.
It is more than likely that the port has a getty running on the line.
Check in the /etc/inittab file. You will have to comment out
the line telling init what to run on that port.
