Most definitely.
I spent a weekend building toolchains when I first started; most blew
up spectacularly, some failed quietly, and when it was all over, I had
two that actually worked....
I think that's why TS uses an ancient toolchain; it's been tested and
it works. I use one that's a bit more up to date, but still not
bleeding edge (I never could get gcc 4.x to build anything useful.)
I've even had failures when trying to build a known-good toolchain
with gcc 4.x as the host_cc.
Now I use gcc 3.4 for both my host_cc and arm_linux_gcc.
