Well, I built the kernel on another machine and it mounts rw

I'm not sure what is going on.

That's what's suposed to happen :) The root filesystem is mounted
read-only to allow for fsck to do it's thing, after that your init
scripts should remount it read-write with, if I remmeber correctly,
mount -o remount rw /Jason
