Yes!  Thats the way I am leaning now... I am trying to get the TS7260
to boot with a kernel on the SD card.  My plan so far:

1) boot using an initrd that mounts the SD card

2) load new kernel from SD card and reboot using 'bootload'

3) boot into second initrd with the kernel from the SD card 

4) mount the SD card root FS and pivot to it

This doubles the boot time, but means we can do as you do and send out
upgrade SD cards.  It just means that remote updates are still
difficult - some of our stuff is going to some pretty remote sites.
