Hi again,

OK, I worked this out and got it working. Figured I'd post this in the
archives for the next newbie down the pipe.

1) Use the connections from the diagram in my original post in this
thread. Note: if you haven't used the MAX232 before, you still need to
fill in the caps etc. from the MAX232 datasheet schematic.

2) Don't short pins 7-8 and 4-6 on the DB9 connector; just connect gnd
(DB9 pin 5) and TX and RX (DB9 pins 2 & 3) to the MAX232.

3) Given 2) above, you should set clocal and rtscts off on /dev/ttyAM0.

4) Don't hunt down pins 7 & 8 on the ribbon cable while watching
sudden death overtime between the Canucks and the Predators. Other
teams may be as distracting; YMMV. 7 is not a large number but somehow
I missed it on my way to connecting pins 8 and 9 (!) of the TS-7400 to
the MAX232.

5) Don't forget to comment out the bits in /etc/inittab which start
gettys on /dev/ttyAM0 and then "killall -sHUP init" to make init
implement the changes.

In the end it turned out to be #4 which was stopping it from working
for me. Fixed that and smooth sailing.

Hope this helps someone else out there!

Torben
