You didn't say if you ran "apt-get update" and it works OK. If not, try that
first.
Regarding the serial console, make sure you are using a null modem cable and set
your terminal program at 115200 baud, 8-1-None. This should be triggered by the
gtty processes in /etc/inittab.
Hope that helps. No idea on the JP6.
