Thanks for the help, it was both problems, udev & nodes.
After I got udev installed it still didn't work, devfs had been hiding
/dev from me. See
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/udev-guide.xml#doc_chap3 (use 'mount -o
bind' with busybox)
2.6 is working great!
