I am using the default yaffs image that came in flash, and 2.4.26-ts9 still boots fine, so the nodes aren't the problem.

since then I've broken it all by an attempted switch to the OE and softfloat EABI. I will revert back in a day or so if I can't resolve the EABI issues, but if your problem is merely dev nodes, the attached /dev directory is enough to boot from.
