That is correct. /dev/ttyAM1 only has RXD and TXD and GND lines.
So it can't do hardware flowcontrol. If the other device is
expecting certain modem signals e.g. DCD, DSR, CTS, then it will not see
them. You will need to modify a cable to set the lines - this is often
done by looping RTS to CTS and DTR to both DCD and DSR, all this at the
handspring end.
