Thanks for the offer.  This is what I am trying to achieve:


       output LED
from  +------>|-------+
hdr   |               |    R (6K or something)
------+               +---^v^v^v---------------
+     |               |                to hdr gnd
      +-----/ --------+
        input sw 

That way I can use the same setup for input and output without
worrying about frying the board.  I will have a switch panel
connected to the 16-pin DIO header.  My concern is that if a pin is
programmed for output, and someone (me most likely) inadvertently
flips the switch, the output will be shorted to ground...  This
would most likely result in a blown board.... 

The DIO header on the board is 3.3V.  Eventually, in the production
version, the LED will be replaced by a opto-isolator, solid state
relay, or similar and the switch will go away.  For testing, though,
I want to make this relatively idiot proof.
