I would suggest that, unless you are experienced with power electronics
and need to squeeze every penny in your design, solid state relays are
the best answer. They provide regulatory agency quality isolation,
logic level drive, and proper protection for the switching circuirty in
a modular package. The cost is only modestly higher than doing the job
properly yourself with discrete components.

Subject: [ts-7000] Using DIO to switch relays
I just got my TS-72x0 board... I'm starting to play with it, and one of
the first things I realized is that the DIO doesn't provide enough
current to drive a relay....
Initially I need to just turn on an LED, but eventually I need to be
able to switch 120 VAC and 24-48 VDC at household-type current draws.
Unfortunately I am not a hardware guy.... But I know this isn't unusual
- does anyone have any pointers, howto, or guidance I can use to educate
myself?
Thanks,
--Yan
