Alas, I can't find the document myself right now. Here's the gist of it, 
from message #806 in this list's archives:

Have you thought about making the root file system CFDisk or similar and
mounting it read only. Have a /usr /var and /tmp as ramdisk(s) for
anything volatile. Tradionally such files as /etc/mtab cause problems, but
can be a softlink into /var or I believe one can just use /proc.

Your applications can (probably) be mounted read-only, on the flash drive, 
and you can run them from there. If they need to write to disk, point them 
to /var on the RAM drive.

I'll keep looking for the document I remember, because I'll need it myself 
soon.
