Re problem 1 - if you put in the various CFdisks (don't mount) and do
fdisk -l /dev/.....
whatever the device is, is there are significant difference between
them?

Yes you can. And I'd recommend it. I've not had any problems with ext2.
Other than having to fsck them on another system when I've accidently
(cough) pulled the power connector out of the ts7200 when playing around.
