Add a 1000uF + 0.1 uF capacitor at the power connector terminal . this help!. I had the same problem with the CF reader.
B.T.W.  Even a fast fuse has a slow response time. The surge spike is so fast that the fuse doesn't heat .

My PSU is rated up to 2A at 5V. Should be more than enough. I think the
on-board fuse would have kicked in at about 800mA anyway.

I just tried an empty USB hub and the very same things happened. The hub
can't be drawing much power so maybe this isn't the problem.

My QuickCam is still running fine, plugs in without any trouble.
