I suspect you have 2 partitions (p1 and p2) on the compact flash.
Are you sure you have a valid filesystem and root filesystem on the first
partition?
On another system check what fdisk says the partitions are.
Maybe you need /dev/hda2 ? How did you set the cfdisk up?
