Hi Will,
>From the late 1980s, when we began the transition to digital formats (DAT) =
we were able to calibrate our field recordings to consistent standards. And=
there were still some accessible sites that seemed more or less healthy =
=96 places I could return to for a second or third recording event, and the=
y=92d still be relatively unscathed.
Now, after 50+ years, I find that over 50+% of this collection comes from h=
abitats so radically compromised or altogether silent vis a vis human endea=
vor that they can no longer be heard in any of their original form. When th=
e idea of the baseline was still operational, we could reasonably assume th=
at the sites we were recording would express themselves within a certain ra=
nge of dynamic equilibrium whenever we returned. However, most of the rapid=
change that has occurred over the past 30 years (which I measure historica=
lly, since the fall of the Berlin Wall, for economic reasons explained else=
where), has rendered that expectation unlikely.
Density, diversity and richness where we live in N. California, have change=
d both abruptly and in measurable numbers, especially over the past decade.=
Spring now occurs two weeks earlier than it did in the early 90s. And the =
warm season lasts longer. Fires, fueled in part by bad management all aroun=
d and climate change (historic drought), in general, have devastated large =
areas seriously altering numerous habitats. Our 10 acres at Wild Sanctuary,=
was part of a wildlife corridor that was pretty rich with sound. Now, afte=
r the fires in 2017, the biome is pretty silent=85perhaps anticipating as p=
art of the process a return to life at some point, but dead quiet, now.
