Hey Andrew,=0D

Properly applying an EQ to a parabolic recordings would help flatten the re=
sponse and improve the recording for scientific analysis. Applying an EQ wo=
n't be exactly the same for each recording as it is based on a combination =
of humidity, distance to the subject, and the parabolic gain curve. The det=
ails will require a more lengthy article to explain, but there are some hin=
ts covered in our article on parabolic accuracy. It still won't be perfect =
because of other environmental issues of reflections and other sounds in th=
e recording, but those are more in the noise region. Applying an EQ would b=
e more of an issue with lower frequency birds and animals. A lot of higher =
pitched birds have a rather narrow band of frequencies and applying an EQ w=
on't change a lot.=0D

As for software suggestions, I know Avid Pro Tools has some nice plug-ins, =
and that program is very popular. I haven't used Reaper, or Audacity, but m=
ost editing software should be able to create EQ envelopes and many allow y=
ou to save them as presets. Personally, I have always used Adobe Audition. =
Audition is a more basic editor. It but does most things unless you need th=
e fancy musical production suite of Raper and Pro Tools. =0D

 Hi Bruce, =0D

Thanks for taking the time answer all these questions, it has certainly st=
imulated discussion and has improved my knowledge of parabolas exponentiall=
y. My sound recording journey has taken me from shotgun mics to record bush=
babies for science in Africa to many other creatures with different biophon=
ic characteristics. Now I have started using quite stereo mics for soundsca=
pe recording which I love, and I am now having trouble using my K6/ME66 and=
67 mics as their sound is so noisy an unnatural. However they serve a purp=
ose which is to make recordings that are good enough to analyse with progra=
mmes like Raven and Avisoft to measure fundamental frequency, harmonics, ca=
ll length etc. Parabolics produce great quiet recordings, to listen to and=
if you have solved the bass dip issue then it is the best of both worlds f=
or many animals frequency ranges, especially with some nice stereo landscap=
e to mix in. But if I may trouble you with a further question; if you appl=
y EQ for parabolic recordings (any software suggestions here, I am familiar=
with Audacity and Reaper?) does that change the sounds qualitative propert=
ies for analysis? =0D
