Perhaps I should know this, but I don't. I have a Sound
Devices MixPre I bought used a few months ago. The owner's
manual suggests the maximum gain is 66dB. I assumed the
relationship to the 10 positions on the gain knob was
linear, and that if I set it on position 8 I would have a
maximum input of about 54dB; the human voice. But when I
was testing my newly reconstructed DIY parabolic reflector
the volume was huge. I had to dial it back to position 5 or
4 and turn down the headphone setting for comfortable
listening. What am I missing about 'maximum gain'? The
sound initially reaching my ears was considerably higher
than 66dB - which delights me; it works!
(I am still writing the last of four segments on this
project on my blog, which I will post as a learning trail,
so others can avoid my errors.
