I tried something similar to this, also with no resulting sound. Eventually
I simply connected a PiP-powered microphone directly to my iPod Touch, and
it all burst into life: http://locus.creacast.com:9001/mobile_saltpoint.ogg
I'll try something more sophisticated next year.
