It is possible to obtain good quality recordings with smart phones if one u=
ses a preamplifier. The recordings will be 16 bit, and mono when an externa=
l mic is used, unless your phone is extra special. There are also very inex=
pensive USB sound adapters available (Sabrent is a good one) that also work=
if your phone is USB OTG compatible. Some USB adapters are stereo, but aga=
in, all of their preamps are noisy, so a good external preamp or amplified =
microphone is needed to make good quality recordings. I would also use Apps=
that allow complete control over gain and limiting like the app called Fie=
ld Recorder. =0D

For those interested, I did a some test recordings comparing a smart phone =
recording to a Tascam DR-05. With no preamp, the smart phone, whether the m=
ic input or USB audio input was used, was noisier than a DR-05. The DR-05 i=
s not noted as being a low noise device either. With a preamp though, eithe=
r device made excellent recordings. Recording with a smart phone can work, =
but you are probably better off using a dedicated recorder, as they are eas=
ier to use in my opinion.=0D
