Each year, on almost precisely the same day (4 January last year), American=
robins gather by the thousands where we live in Northern California, to fe=
ast and get drunk on the small toyon (looks a bit like holly) berries that =
ferment in the woods surrounding us just after the 1st of January. After ea=
ting the berries, a sea of orange staggers around the driveway until they s=
ober up enough to take flight. Walking amongst them in this short example r=
ecorded about an hour ago are three of four deer that frequent where we liv=
e.
