I am finding myself a little confused with this.

The info linked from Avisoft on mic output noise Selecting Mic Preamps http=
://www.rane.com/note148.html Table 3

Selecting Mic Preamps http://www.rane.com/note148.html Selecting a preamp =
for a specific microphone is not easy. This explains how to convert microph=
one specifications into preamp specifications.

suggests that the lower the sensitivity and lower the noise floor the low=
er the output noise. And I assumed that the output noise might be a good wa=
y of comparing microphones.

But something like the Line Audio CM3 that gives a very good output noise -=
120dBu is considered by users to be noisier than the MBHO 440 cardoid (outp=
ut noise - 113) because the MBH0 is more sensitive.

e.g.a supplier of both these mics advises against the Line Audio for low no=
ise ambient recordings and suggests the MBHO as a better choice. Which seem=
s to contradict the conclusion you would come to by consulting the table.

Am I missing the obvious here, I assumed the output noise given by the tabl=
e was the total noise based on balancing the benefits of a low noise floor =
against the disbenefits of a lower sensitivity.

Thanks,

Graham
