Since you are starting out and interested in ambient recording (as opposed
to recording individual species calls), I would suggest you want a pair of
microphones to record ambient stereo. Some might suggest you could build
yourself a pair of microphones out of low cost capsules like the EM172s but
since you are new to the field, I would suggest buying an inexpensive pair
of well made microphones.
I bought a pair of Clippy EM-172 microphones from Micbooster (~USD $75) and
am very happy with them. They are well built, inexpensive and quiet. I
have no affiliation with the company, I just think their little mics are a
"best buy" at that price point.
With your Sony M10 and a pair of these microphones, you could get right
outside and start experimenting with different microphone positionings to
see what sorts of stereo sounds work best for you. I use mine in a little
"SASS" type setup that I cut out of a cheap foam yoga block and have been
very pleased with my results.
