Hi Daan,
Thnx for the Thank You.
Glad to have been of some help! Understand only too well your dilemma.
Given your sur- & firstname, I initially thought you also to be a Dutch cit=
izen ... In which case I could have easily showed you my set-ups.
Since you seem to live in the UK instead , I wholeheartedly recommend you g=
ive Graham Morfitt a ring /mail message.
I personally -with the UK-ish weather in mind- would steer you towards pane=
ls that employ photovoltaic technology that also generates reasonable power=
/current under less than perfect light conditions. Look for that into the S=
UNLINQ class category of panels (CIGS Technology) for instance (or amorphou=
s silica or the Powerfilm kind http://www.modernoutpost.com/product/powerfi=
lm-folding-60/)
, as opposed to crystalline sillicon based panels that have higher efficien=
cies ( if so) at high intensity sun conditions but their output collapses w=
ith only minor reductions of high intensity irradiation. Net output of CIGS=
or the powerfilm-type of panels easily beats those in most real- world les=
s optimal conditions. The Powerfilm 60 Watts panel (see link above), does 3=
,6 A (at 15V & 1450 grs. (1,8 A @ 800 grs for the 30 W F1800 type) ...these=
are foldabkes. The rollables also come in higher Wattages 40,60 check www.=
powerfilmsolar.com<http://www.powerfilmsolar.com>) for details.
I have long looked at (and thought over) higher wattages myself. Please not=
e that nrth of the 20 watt range, voltage regulators come in sight. For re=
asons of efficiency optimization and equipment protection, adding to cost, =
bulk, weight and complexity of systems in that range.
How much WHrs usage do you need to get covered per day?
G'Day

Thanks a lot for your answer, Gerrit, it's been helpful. I'd not heard of t=
he Powerfilm Solar panels yet. After having checked the specs of my main po=
rtable battery a bit more thoroughly it seems I need something more powerfu=
l (it needs a minimum of 1.5 amps to charge). FWIW, I've in the meantime fo=
und the Sunkingdom 39w and 52w panels which seem to pack a lot of juice and=
can provide power to a 12v battery at up to 2.2A in optimum conditions. Th=
ese are much larger and heavier than the one you use though, multiple folda=
ble panels weighing close to 2 kg.
I've also looked closely at the Powermonkey products such as the Solargoril=
la, which have a really fancy marketing and appear to be perfect, but onlin=
e reviews vary wildly. Other than that I've not found many other suitable o=
ptions that are easily shippable to Europe/UK.
Cheers,

Hi Daan,
I use them frequently and have been having reasonable results (all pending =
proper matching battery to Solar panel, panel-wattage/power-needs ratio and=
of course light conditions) with the waterproof, nearly indestructable, re=
asonably lightweight and also operatinal at lower light intensities (typica=

ble panels of Powerfilm http://www.powerfilmsolar.com/products/?r7__7_watt_=

I typically use 7 Watt panels -either stand-alone or in parallel for more c=
harging current- which, at 14.5 Volts (max) deliver 500 mA (max) each (in o=
ptimal conditions. Weight ca 280 grs..
As said, one needs to carefully match the panel with the current/power rece=
ptive device (typically an intermedate rechargeable battery-pack., although=
I also directly couple them panels to my PIXO C-USB one charger fitss all =
for my AA's Li-IOns Camera batts et cet.)).
For details/support I recommend a look at Graham Morfitt's Modern Outpost w=
ebsite http://www.modernoutpost.com/about-us/ & <mail=
to:>.
I purchased my panels with him and am very content in both pricing/ordering=
and pre-after sales. Knowledgeable and helpfull Found/owner of the company=
.
Am not shure whether he still delivers goods to overseas (Netherlands in my=
case). Feel free to contact me for details, closer inspection.
My 2 cents hope it helps ...

Onderwerp: [Nature Recordists] Portable solar chargers?
Hello,
Does anyone here use portable solar chargers for charging recording equipme=
nt (batteries) when out and about and not near an electricity source? If so=
, I'd be curious to hear your recommendations.
Thank you,
Daan
