Charles,
If the resistor is unscreened it may be picking up digitiser noise from the
recorder. The input is probably unbalanced (ie. not push-pull) and
susceptible to any interference around. TV set or computer? It's not a
problem especially if it is out of the hiss noise frequency range.
You can get spurious HF peaks on spectrograms which are not necessarily
there - just artefacts of the digital processes. At 44.1, high ones tend to
get filtered out. With the Audacity editor, I get some odd displays,
especially with a rising tone. A spectrogram has its own sampling periods
which may beat with the digital samples.

Yes please but don't bother cleaning them up. Short quarter minute or so
quiet sections with hiss to compare are enough.

OK, I’ve uploaded the files to Dropbox (ignore the invitation to sign up for
Dropbox, you don’t need an account to access the files):
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4ou8oqxf4iosfuo/AADwQfyf9nH25VU_RMBeLjMAa?dl=0
<https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4ou8oqxf4iosfuo/AADwQfyf9nH25VU_RMBeLjMAa?dl=0>
They’re sorted into different folders, each of the files is around 10 seconds
long. There’s noise at the beginning and end of the internal mic recordings
where I stuffed it under a beanbag for noise dampening. Only silence on the
ME66.

Hi All,
Here is the direct download link (change the zero to a one at the end, and the
download should start right away):
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4ou8oqxf4iosfuo/AADwQfyf9nH25VU_RMBeLjMAa?dl=1
Cheers!

John,
There are three ways of altering the gain of a preamplifier.
Volume control on the input. This prevents overloads on high input levels,
but the preamp noise level stays put.
Volume control on the output. This lowers the effective noise level of the
preamp with higher signals, but doesn't protect against overload.
Volume control in the negative feedback of the preamp. This lowers the noise
on a low gain setting but doesn't always protect against an input stage
overload.
A common arrangement on a good recorder is a combination of a negative
feedback type and a switched input level attenuator for loud stuff.
