We are spoilt in the UK as we have BBC Radio 3 for serious stuff which is
uncompressed on transmission. Not so good in cars, though. :-)
BBC Radio mixes of concerts like the Proms are often very different to TV
mixes and both are "manually compressed" in the multimic mix so you don't
hear what the live audience hears, but that is inevitable.
Compression aside, my main impression of the choirs was that you couldn't
hear the words clearly, just the vowels. That's why I generally used more
than one pair of mics on choirs. You can get a nice sonorous bass section
that way. The music was beautiful, but choirs sing words. Or am I simply
out of date? :-)
