John, indeed. :) David, I very much agree on the compression. While it seems impossible to avoid these days, I pray the EBU 128/BS 1770 broadcast standards may help find the way back to something more sensible. I'm not holding my breath though. Every now and then, something (non-classical music) I've recorded finds it's way onto CBC and I dread that, as does everyone I know who is in the same position. Regardless of broadcast standards (which they are supposed to apply), it all gets squashed terribly. It makes one wonder if the only defense is to squash it yourself, first. Another consideration is that the best playback system many folks have these days is in their car where, at speed, the bottom 70dB are inaudible anyway. I think that's what most people mix music for these days. Sad. k > > |
