Hi!

I have a DR-680 and I'm happy with it. I think the monitoring is easy on it=
.

I would not buy a mixer. I would put that money on a better mic. Why? Becau=
se in nature recording the levels is never ever high enough... I have never=
used Low gain on the recorder. It's always on high and a high setting and =
that's still not high enough... you will probably need to increase gain in =
post most of the time. There are very few occasions like a thunderstorm tha=
t will make you touch the level knobs on the recorder. Set it and forget it=
... :)

The preamps on 680 is better (have lower noise) than most (all?) mics in yo=
ur price range, so a mixer isn't needed for that either. I know that it's n=
ice with real knobs to twist, but if you never need to twist them they are =
just in the way and the mixer is an extra thing to carry around and also ha=
ve batteries for.

So my suggestion is, buy the best (low noise) mics you can afford, but that=
's just my opinion. :)
