Peter,

Because as a trainee exercise in listening they should be aware of
everything they hear, including their own breathing, tummy rumbles and
clothing noise. Total sound awareness is important. Recent exposure to loud=

noises usually produces temporary tinnitus at least, and this is just one o=
f
the many sounds we normally ignore.
One form of tinnitus, temporary or permanent, is at high frequencies which=

have been lost. Personally, I hear ringing above about 13KHz which is my
upper limit of hearing - not too bad at 72. :-)
